Here is a brief summary of action items your contributions have supported in past years:
  • In both Illinois and Massachusetts, we have distributed of thousands of "Crying Cards" which outline strategies caregivers and parents can use to calm a fussy baby. These cards are available for distribution in both English and Spanish. (Please contact us if you know of any organization interested in distributing these cards.)
  • We initiated a public awareness campaign to "stop shaking" using yellow taxi cab toppers in and around Boston.
  • We've maintained an extensive website with information and links to resources.
  • We've continued a public service campaign in Boston aimed at Shaken Baby Syndrome education and prevention via bus and train advertising.
  • We were a major sponsor of the North American Shaken Baby Conference 2004 held in Toronto, Canada. Debbie Eappen was the keynote speaker and we sponsored a number of family members of shaken baby victims to attend and speak to health and legal professionals.
  • We are a major sponsor of the "Child Abuse Quarterly Medical Update", a publication created by Robert Reece, M.D. and the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. This publication summarizes the most recent medical research regarding child abuse and is then distributed to medical and law enforcement professionals nationwide.
  • Working with the Children's Trust Fund and Boston child abuse experts to establish in-hospital prevention training for parents.
  • Distribution of beanie babies to children and siblings at Children's hospital and NEMC
  • We've supported victim medical necessities to help them live better lives despite disabilities from SBS/AHT.  See an example equipment request here.
  • We've funded research on Abusive Head Trauma.  See an example result here of Dr. Berger's work done with MEF funding in the Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, or a shorter article addressing a component of this research.

With your ongoing support, the Matty Eappen Foundation will continue its good work.
